Why a Bottle of Five Tablets Costs $65

by HempSZN on Oct 05, 2026

Pura Vida Uplifting and Tranquil are $65 for a bottle of five tablets. That is roughly $13 a tablet, and it is the first thing people push back on. Fair enough. Let's go through it properly, including the part where we tell you not to buy it.

What you are actually comparing against

The instinct is to compare $65 against a tub of 60 lion's mane capsules for $20 from a big-box supplement brand. That comparison breaks down for two reasons, one of which is in our favour and one of which is not.

In our favour: the amounts in Pura Vida are lab-verified per serving, not label claims. Uplifting tests at lion's mane 203.58 mg, bacopa 122.15 mg, L-theanine 91.43 mg, rhodiola 81.43 mg and saffron 11.4 mg — measured by FESA Labs, sample D90060824-1, and published in full. A great many cheap supplements have never been independently assayed at all, and the gap between label and content in this industry is well documented.

Not in our favour: on a pure milligrams-per-dollar basis, single-ingredient bulk powder beats this product and always will. If your goal is to get the most lion's mane for the least money, buy bulk lion's mane. We will not pretend otherwise.

Where the money actually goes

We are not going to publish our supplier's invoice, and we are not going to invent a cost breakdown we cannot source. What we can tell you is which cost lines exist in a product like this and do not exist in a cheap one:

  • Saffron. It is one of the most expensive agricultural products on earth by weight. Even 11.4 mg of real saffron extract per serving is a meaningful cost line, and it is the single clearest reason a formula like this cannot be cheap.
  • Five standardised extracts in one tablet. Each has to be sourced, assayed and dosed. Multi-extract formulations cost more to manufacture than single-ingredient capsules, before anyone takes a margin.
  • Independent testing, per SKU. Every formula here went through a full panel — actives plus a kratom alkaloid screen plus a kavalactone screen. That cost is fixed per batch and gets spread across a small first order, which is exactly why small brands skip it.
  • A small first order. We bought 48 bottles. Per-unit economics at 48 units are not per-unit economics at 5,000, and we are not going to pretend our volume is bigger than it is.

The honest comparison nobody runs

Run it the other way. To replicate one Uplifting serving from separate products you would need five standardised extracts at those specific amounts, bought individually, measured individually, and taken together. You can do that. People do. It costs less per milligram and considerably more in time, and nothing in it is independently verified unless you pay for your own testing.

What you are paying the premium for is that the formulation decision and the verification are already done, and that you can check our work against a signed lab report rather than taking our word for it.

Whether that is worth $13 a tablet depends entirely on how much you value the verification. For some people it plainly is not, and that is a rational position.

Calming is the value SKU

Worth knowing: Pura Vida Calming is $45 for 10 tablets — about $4.50 a tablet, roughly a third of the others. Turmeric, ginger, quercetin and boswellia are far cheaper inputs than saffron and lion's mane, and the price reflects it honestly rather than being levelled up to match the range.

Despite the name, Calming is a daily joint comfort formula, not an evening product. If the $65 is the barrier and joint comfort is what you are after anyway, start there.

Who should not buy this

We would rather lose the sale than take it from the wrong person:

  • If you want maximum dose per dollar, buy single-ingredient bulk. This is not that product.
  • If you are expecting a drug-like effect, this is not it. These are botanical extracts at the amounts shown, and several fall below the doses used in human trials — we published that comparison ourselves, including where ours comes up short.
  • If you take blood thinners, the turmeric, ginger and quercetin in Calming can interact. Talk to a provider first.
  • If you have any liver concern, Tranquil contains kava and is not for you. Read the kava guide and the FDA advisory before considering it.

If you want to try one cheaply

PURA10 takes $10 off any Pura Vida order through 31 October. On Calming that brings a 10-tablet bottle to $35, which is the least expensive way into the range.

Not sure which formula? Compare all three, or read the lab reports first — we would honestly rather you did it in that order.
